Dear all,

We are a french family with 5 children…from 8 years to 4 years.

We plan to spend 3 weeks next summer in Norway and Sweden.

We will come through Danemark with our 110.

We try to find the most beautiful place, roads (if possible not touristic), places where we can stay one night for a small trek.

I am opened to all your ideas

For info, we plan to use tent as much as possible. For youth hostel, do you know if we must book?

Do you know a place to see whale? If possible not a commercial & touristic place where we must spend 50 Eur per people…(x 7….)

Do you know a beautiful fjords (to avoid tourists)? a quiet place do do some canoe (I will have in my car a inflatable canoe and my plan is to use it few times with 1 child with me each time)

Thanks by advance

hi i'm french too , so i can explain in french ... the best place in sweden

How about Copenhagen-Gothenberg-Oslo-Lillehammer (Hunderfossen for the children)-Trondheim-Bergen-Haugesund/Karmøy (Norwegian land rover club annual camp)-Stavanger-Kristiansand (Zoo)-Hirtshals (Denmark).

This is less driving and more spectaular than driving in woods of Sweden. Places like La route de l'Atlantique, Le Geirangerfjord are recommended. If you like skiing you can try summer skiing in Folgefonna which is 2.5 hours of driving from Bergen or Voss.

I think if you have 5 little children its not so much fun only driving for 3 weeks like you would if you go all the way up to the north. Anyway. Just some thoughts. :)

Hi Guigui

And welcome. Yes I do understand you wanna catch it all during your 3 week stay amoungst us northern people. It`s not a problem to reach all places in 3 weeks.

I recommend when you have crossed the brigde from copenhagen, you do all the swedish main cities at first, then take the swedish east coast up to Kiruna and drive that bit at night, It`s a fast track and you can go from stockholm to Kiruna during one night( start at 21.00 when kids is sleepy and you be in Kiruna the next morning at 09.00 ) From Kiruna at summertime there is only an 8-9 hour drive to northcape. So fooling around in Kiruna for a day is more than enough, then drive up to the most north an explore the view.

Now the real trip starts, do the slow tracks down from north cape thru Tromsø, catch the whale Safari at andøya( booking@whalesafari.no ) they know how to spot some whales, They actually garante you will see whales. Then follow the coast line thru Lofoten( do some surfing ) take the slow route further down thru Norway. Remeber to catch Strynefjellet summerski, Geiranger, Lysefjorden and preikestolen on your slow track down.

If you stay off the main routes, you can probably set up your tent and camp for free where ever you find a spot ( just dont leave any trash ) and good karma will shine back on you. Since your driving an Defender it just seems right to camp aside the car.

eventually you end up in Oslo and you can easy find your way back home full of good northern impressions.

If you get stuck somewhere, just visit this forum and I`m sure you get an helping hand.

Best regards Brage

Which road do you advice from kiruna to Nord kapp?

Road passing finland and Norway (a little bit longer but to avoid the same road when we come back)

An Idea where to find a cd with norvegian map?

Thanks

Yes, you go on route 93 (only open during summer ) crossing thru Finland for a short while and into Norway crossing the Alta plateau going thru Kautokaino, ( you definitely meet the Sami people ). and then up to nortcape.

You find a different route going down towards Tromsø.

Can`t help you find a CD with norwegian maps ( try google it ), I just use google maps ;) . I good ide might be just buying some old style road book with all the maps and info you need when you arrive in Norway.

Best regards Brage

In the west country there is Kjerag and Preikestolen. Nice place to camp is Lysebotten camping.

Also Brusand camping is a good site next to a lovely beach.

The North Cape is fairly commercialized, AND it is not the northernmost point on the European mainland. It is on an island and not even the northernmost point on that island. BUT it has spectacular cliffs, just like many other points on that coast.

Finnmark is full of good hiking possibilities (and of mosquitos and midges if you are in the wrong place and the wind does not blow) If you can do without the extra driving and kudos of the hike to reach 71 degrees north away from the tourist buses, there are a little bit closer, shorter, child-friendly walks in Lofoten where you can look out over the ocean with no land between you and the North pole. (on top of Moskenesøy for instance).

If you bring proper hiking tents, are used to alpine hiking and prepared for rain&cold & carry your own supplies, you can plan round trips of a day or two away from the LR using a good map. I have found that even small children enjoy hiking IF you do not have a hurried schedule, but time to stop and play with streams and examine interesting finds along the path.

In the more frequented areas the Norwegian hikers association (www.DNT.no) have marked trails with a red T. They also have a chain of huts, some self-service cabins, some with food being served.

In the middle of Norway you will find that the gravel roads are small, private or community toll-roads, so bring a stack of 10kr. coins. Maps usually indicate whether they are open to the public. Offroading in the sense of going outside an established track is illegal , but there are of course dedicated drives if you wish to use low-range and winch.

If , when you go from France to Norway, you can do without Oslo and wish to cut down on driving, there is a 4 hour express ferry from the tip of Jutland in Denmark to either Larvik or Kristiansand. Larvik if you wish to go straight northwards through forests and mountains on twisty roads to the inner part of Sognefjorden (or on a labyrinth of local roads closer to the coast than the main road southwards & try your canoe in the warmer waters of "Sørlandet". Kristiansand in order to get further south- where again you can seek out the few outer roads on the way to Stavanger and up the coast.

Unlike in France, where you can get good food in most small villages, do not expect much here. Like in France, you should have proper footwear for hiking. Stay away from glaciers unless you have proper equipment and experience, but snowfields can be great fun for children if thw weather is warm.

Etc. etc. there are volumes of good (and less good) advice, but the advantage of being with a LR club is that you might get some local contacts.

Bon voyage.

If you're returning through Oslo to Sweden I'd reccomend not to follow e6, but to do the smaller roads. Here we have some really nice areas for canoing and where it's easy to put up the tent "in the wilderness" just by the road. The nature is more subdued compared to western or Northern norway, but that just implyes that it's easier to find a spot for the tent or a place to put out the canoe.

Some pictures taken in the area
