Maybe its only the U-joints. A bit disapointed about the Garage, they should at least be able to find out what causing the rattle. Changing the U-joints is not a big job, and is also not a thing you can put on hold if that is causing your problems...

Do not give up that easily, seems likes only minor problems.

Good luck

Yeah, well...

They were very friendly. Yesterday a new problem came up. When I give some throttle, something is vibrating. So we went to Bil I Nord for checking out both things. They found a small leak in a hose of the watersystem. They didn’t know which part it is, neither do I. They said that this is not a big problem, just top up. The rattling noise they have thought is something with the motor, they didn’t make a testdrive though. They recommended to ship the car to Trondheim to the LR Garage. For the Hurtigruten our car is to high. I just wanted to rent a car at Herz that was in an Opel garage. So we talking a bit and the mechanic there made a test drive with me and thought that it is nothing with the motor but with the drivechain. He checked the shafts but couldn’t find something. He thought that if it is something with them, anybody can fix it on the way. So if it is getting worse and fault is  clearer then go to the next garage available.

We are thinking at the moment what we‘ll do next... especially which direction. Maybe home, selling it and buy a new car for this filming trip, or try to drive further on until it breaks down completely...

Shipping from the North to Trondheim would be a financial disaster...

Our German mobile club would pay for the towing up to 3000 Kroner... the rest is at us.

At least they would pay for wrecking...

These are the news for today.

Greetings from Leknes

By the way, „ shipping to Trondheim is a financial Desaster“ is what the man from NAF told me. I asked him how much and he wouldn’t tell me. Just too much. It seems he doesn’t want to help me either before the weekend. Even not for money. Very interesting.

Hi

You can  try to contact meca Sortland +47-7611-0700

Independent garage, press 9 for information in English. Also contact for hertz rentalcars 24h callservice.

Maybe they can check  vibrations and change clutch or u-joints.

Then you can search for wildlife in Vesterålen. Sortland is also harbour for hurtigruten.

Best wishes to you

Chipping with Hurtigruta is not expensive if you go with the car.

Its very expensive if you send tha car alone and no one travel with the car on the boat.

Thank you for your help. Yesterday we phoned hurtigruten and they told us that the maximum height is 2.40m. Sadly our car is 2,65m high, so hurtigruten is not an option. The roof is not removable. Well, as removable as the original roof. But thank you for the idea.

Have a beautiful new year, mate

You have nailed it!

This morning I‘ve checked the Driveshafts again myself and found a destroyed bearing in the front driveshaft. Because I have the double joint from the disco2 mounted and the fault is in there, I‘ll order the whole thing with nuts and bolts. So it is easy to change.

The Driveshaft with all the bearings made already 200.000 Km so I think it is the best to change the whole thing. And I’ll order a waterpump and some other parts as well...

Thank you so much for all your valued help, thank you all!

 You have a great community!

I wish you all a happy new year!

Thank you so much for the link. This was a very important information, how you get your spareparts here in Noway. It helped me a lot. I have ordered my spare parts there now. Now I went through the whole process and I am confident now  to get along here in Norway with our Defender. Thank you so much for your great help.

Happy new year!

Happy new year to you.

remember to look up and enjoy the northen ligths. To camp in the middel of nowhere. With only white plains of snow all around. Maybe a cettle on a wood fire. And the northen ligths dancing and changing colors. North of Norway in the winter can be maqic.

have a safe trip.

Thank you so much. We are looking forward to go further, but have to wait for the new propshaft from England. Next week we hopefully will go to the north. Northern Lights? We are so thankful that we had several beautiful ones over Christmas time. See the attached foto. I can’t wait to practice your ideas, Leif :o)

Hi!

About the rattle in the engine, did you sort it out?

Have you checked the aux belt drive tensioner and idler pullys? Their bearings tend to suffer in cold climate.

Good luck and a happy New year to you!

Regards

Eirik

Hi Eirik,

I wish you a happy new year as well. It was the front propshaft that made the noises and the rattling, so thankfully not the motor. Thanks mate

From England?

Biltema have propshaft 63-110 or

63-100

From Volvo 240.

Oh, didn’t know about that. This is interesting. Is this a replacement for the defender front propshaft? Because we have changed to the Discovery II TD5  propshaft TVB000110 when we put in OME Springs back in 2006. So we‘ve changed the flange as well. So unfortunately I need the Discovery propshaft again to keep things easy on the way. Modyfiing things away from original is not a good thing for overlanding, I know. But I have ordered some other parts as well, so it’s ok for me. Thank you for this valuable information.

Have a beautiful new year, Steffen

And I have to admit, it is a beautiful place to wait for spare parts here

Looks like a nice trip! The Biltema parts are unfortunately only UJ’s, not the complete prop shaft. But if you’re in desperate need for UJ’s, they are a perfect solution.

I guess it’s the needle bearing inside the front part of the front prop shaft that’s a gonner? After 200 k it’s probably a good idea to change the whole shaft. But save the shaft and refurbish it later, and sell it. You’ll probably get half of your money spent back. ;)

Have a nice trip further on! Hopefully without any more surprises. But if you do get surprises, please let us know. We’re at least 500 active people in here at all times, who are happy to help other people with the same illness. :)

And if you want to Get that viking feeling, buy yourselfs som raindeer skins, put it under your sleepingbags and sleep outside, under the flaming sky. I bet it will be a memory that will last.

I was so lucky to spent 9 mnd of my service in Finnmark. 4 mnd in winter. Cross skiing over the tundra and staying outside for weeks. And after a sun burst we got fast moving Aurora borealis in all colors. We sat in silenc for hours.

Have a safe trip
